Learning From a Book

There are several methods you can use to teach yourself how to play guitar. Perhaps the cheapest method is to simply go to your local bookstore or music shop and buy a book that will instruct you (hopefully with accompanying pictures) how to position your fingers to play notes and chords. While this method has probably worked for many terrific guitar players out there, it can be a bit tedious and confusing. This leads to a lot of bad habits, frustrations and ultimately to a lot of guitars getting dusty in the corners of bedrooms.

One on One Lessons

If if it sounds to difficult to teach yourself how to play guitar, you might try paying someone else to. This method, if used properly, will be very effective. It will require you to practice and allow you to actually see someone forming the chords and playing the riffs while you are trying to learn them. The downsides to one on one lessons are that they tend to be expensive and require you to fit into a specific schedule. Many guitar teachers will charge you for your weekly lesson even if can't make it due to other obligations. Also, some new learners find it intimidating to learn in front of a judge and would find more success in the relaxed atmosphere of their own homes.

Learn From a Friend

This method is excellent, assuming you have a reliable friend who is a skilled and knowledgeable guitar player, with enough free time to give you frequent detailed guitar lessons.

Learn From a DVD

This method allows you to teach yourself how to play guitar at your own speed, in your own home and without spending a lot of money. It is slightly more expensive than a book, but the option of hearing and watching someone play right in front of you is more than worth the difference. Learn and Master the guitar is a home study program with a ton of lessons on a collection of DVD's that will start you off as a beginner and, if you stick with it, can help you become as skilled as any guitarist you come across. This method is usually highly successful and is growing in popularity all the time.
