Learn the Guitar Fretboard
Becoming a skilled guitar player requires that you learn the
guitar fretboard. I'm not suggesting you need to sit down and
memorize it all, but it will make things a lot easier as you
progress through lessons and learning if you know what notes
fall where.
The main benefit of having this skill is for scales and
playing lead, but before you can do that you will need to have
a good understanding of keys, how chords are made up, and what
chords are part of each key. If you're looking for a good
guitar lesson course that can teach you theory and intermediate
skills check out Learn and Master Guitar.
So, onto lerning the guitar fretboard. As you can see from
the image below you'll see the names of the strings, then the
names of each note on that string and which fret it is. You can
see that the same notes rotate quite a bit through the neck at
different places.
There are some neat little phrases that people often use to
help them remember the different notes on each string. Those
are noted beside the diagram.

Spend some time learning each string one at a time, cycling
through the notes, thats the best way to learn the guitar
fretboard. It takes time, but it's a skill that you'll be glad
you have as you progress in your guitar education.
