Learn & Master Guitar has been at the top of my list for some time. It’s the only guitar lessons dvd course to be win Acoustic Guitar Magazine’s players choice award, it is the course all others try to imitate.

This course is just like taking private guitar lessons but from home, at your own pace and for a lot less money.

The topics and styles covered provide about 2 years worth of guitar lesson content for beginners for about 1/10th the cost of taking private lessons.

Learn and Master Guitar gives you three ways to learn:

Jam Along CDs
Lesson Book

The author and teacher of the course, Steve Krenz, is professional guitar instructor and performer. He has taught hundreds of beginner and intermediate guitar players and knows how to best present this material.

#2 Beginner Guitar System

This is a new learn guitar dvd course, but it made it’s way into my top three. Compared to Learn & Master Guitar the Beginner Guitar System does not cover as much material. I would say this course is strictly for beginners, while intermediate players would still find a lot of value in the Learn and Master course.

Awesome Video Quality

Nate Savage, the instructor, has been playing guitar for more then 15 years and his teaching style is fast paced. The DVD video quality is the best of any course I’ve seen, and the on screen graphics and picture-in-picture lesson videos make understanding beginner topics easy.

For additional materials the Beginner Guitar System includes a spiral bound work book for referemce and Jam along DVDs and Cds for practicing.

Newer Course

A downfall to the Beginner Guitar System dvd course is that it’s newer. Because of this there is no community built up around the course like there is with Learn and Master Guitar. This means it could be more difficult to ask questions and get answers while learning from home.

While there is less content in the Beginner Guitar System it also sells for about $50 bucks less then Learn & Master Guitar at $97.

#3 Amazing Guitar Secrets

I haven’t been a huge fan of this course, but compared to other guitar instruction dvds that offer very little useful content the Amazing Guitar Secrets course by Dan Denly is still in my top 3. This course comes with the fewest number of DVDs of those I’ve reviewed (2 DVDs).

Great Teacher

Dan’s credentials are solid (graduating with a music degree in guitar) but the video quality is lower then Learn and Master Guitar and the Beginner Guitar System.

Dan offers some great lessons on theory and the more intricate parts of intermediate guitar. Making this a great course if you’ve taken some previous private lessons. In fact I’d say that this course is better for intermediate to advanced guitar player. For beginners I have to suggest you consider one of the other two courses suggested on this page.

There is a lesson book and online support materials with these guitar instruction dvds, but the course material is less organized then that of Learn and Master.

The Amazing Guitar Secrets course sells for $97.

My Conclusions

If you’re a beginner guitar player you can’t beat the amount of content and quality instruction included with Learn and Master Guitar. Although the Beginner Guitar System is a viable alternative for about $50 bucks less.

It really comes down to what you’re learning goals are.

If you’re interested in making guitar a life long hobby I suggest Learn and Master Guitar. The extra intermediate and advanced lessons included with the course will take you a lot further then the beginner only lessons included with the Beginner Guitar System.

When you compare the cost difference between the two dvd guitar courses it’s really irrelevant since there is so much more content included with Learn and Master.
