My Experience With Guitar Instruction DVDs
It’s a thrill to teach yourself how to play guitar using a guitar instruction dvd. The fact that you’re in complete control of how quickly you learn, how much you practice and ultimately how good you become.
I know this first hand because I’ve used guitar instruction dvds over the past couple of years to improve my playing skills. I feel that I’m better today then I thought I ever would be.
The same can happen for you if you have the right course to learn from.
There are a lot of different guitar lessons online to choose from, and I’m not going to pretend that I’ve used them all, but I will talk to you about the program I have used, why I like it, and why I feel it’s a good choice for you to learn guitar. Below you’ll find an overview of what I feel are the key points about my choice guitar lesson dvd. Then below that in italics and indented I’ll give you my personal thoughts on things.
My Choice
The Gibson Learn and Master Guitar program is more then just a guitar instruction dvd, it’s quite possibly the best online guitar lessons course out there. Ti consists of twenty different dvds with each one containing two different lessons and workshops.
Sidenote: Workshops are review sessions where the instructor goes over what you need to practice for the next several days and at what point you should be ready to move onto the next disc.
Instructor
The one thing that separates one guitar instruction dvd from another is the teacher who’s in the videos, and this set of dvds has one of the best teachers they could find.
Steve Krenz has over 20 years experience in the music industry teaching guitar, performing and working as a studio musician. He knows just the right way to present material so that beginners will understand it quickly and effectively.
I had spent about five years toying around with the guitar. Then when YouTube became a big thing I started looking for free lessons. I got so far, but when I felt stuck I didn’t find any instructor providing free videos that could help me break through to the next level. When I got my Learn & Master Guitar Course I could see that there’s a big difference between the so called instructors providing free content on YouTube and a professional like Steve. He really knows his stuff, and his explanations of complex topics like musical theory and scales is crystal clear.
Course Content
Another thing that I find separates guitar instruction dvds is what they teach after the basics chords and strumming. It’s reasonably easy to teach a learn to play guitar dvd that talks about how to play your major and minor open chords and even a few barre chords. It’s more intermediate techniques such as scales, soloing and styles like the blues and rock that help you become a well rounded guitarist.
Learn and Master Guitar is the most in-depth dvd guitar course in terms of both techniques and styles taught. I say this first had because after I first learned my basic open and barre chords I kind of felt stuck.
I had taught myself thus far but I realized I needed a teacher to help me progress. That’s when I bought the Learn & Master Guitar Program. I skipped the first couple of discs as it was review for me, but once I hit the lessons on musical theory, scales and key signatures the guitar neck really started to open up for me. Then when I started learning some basic blues techniques later on in the course I had found my passion for playing and practicing everyday again.
Remember it’s important that you feel challenged other wise you get bored too easily.
Practice and Support
It’s often over looked when you buy a guitar instruction dvd, but the practice and support materials provided are just as important as the actual video lessons on the dvds. Why? Well because learning something the first time is fine and dandy, but it’s the practice that makes perfect.
Learn and Master Guitar helps you master the skills they teach in four different ways.
- The Video Sessions and Workshops
- JamTracks you can play along to while you practice
- A Lesson Book you Can refer to while practicing
- An online support website where you can go to ask questions if you get stuck
I religiously watch the videos usually once a week, then I will practice what I’m supposed to for the next week or two using the lesson book as a reference. Of course sometimes I go back and look at the lesson book to get a refresher on something I learned a few weeks ago, or I’ll pop in one of the jam discs just for fun and play around for an hour when I want to unwind. All of the materials together make the perfect suite of guitar learning tools and I find they compliment each other very well, but they also offer you the chance to make the experience your own.
It’s Up To You
I don’t think there’s any secret that I feel the Learn and Master Guitar Instruction DVDs are a great product. In fact I feel they’re the best guitar lesson dvd you’ll find online.
