Beginner Guitar Lesson #3 – How to Tune a Guitar

We have teamed up with our friend Nate Savage of the Beginner Guitar System to bring you a series of beginner guitar lesson that will help you get started fast.

It’s not much fun playing a guitar that isn’t in tune. In fact it’s almost impossible because you cannot know if what you’re playing is correct or not. That’s why our next beginner lesson video covers how to tune a guitar.

In this video you’ll see how Nate uses an electric tuner (actually his ipod in this case) to tune his guitar. I recommend that all beginners get either an app for their smart phone or an electric tuner to ensure they can quickly get their instrument in tune before they play.

Tuning a guitar by ear is possible, but it’s tough without some reference note to go by. Also there is a method you can use to ensure each of your guitar strings is in tune with each other, how ever you might find when you sit down to play with a friend you’re strings are actually quite a ways out of standard tuning.

You can get an easy tuner from Gibson if you have an iPhone or an iPod touch, also I believe there are applications available for android phones and Black Berry’s. If you don’t have any of those devices I suggest picking up a $15 or $20 tuner from your local music store.
