Beginner Guitar Lesson #2 – Guitar String Names

We have teamed up with our friend Nate Savage of the Beginner Guitar System to bring you a series of beginner guitar lesson that will help you get started fast.

The second lesson is about learning the guitar string names. While there are only 6 strings you’d be surprised just how many beginners skip this step and then find themselves having to go back and learn it a few weeks or months later.

In the video Lesson above Nate gives you an easy to remember acronym to remember the 6 strings.

E —— 6
A —— 5
D —— 4
G —— 3
B —— 2
e —— 1

Some times you will hear the strings being referred to as numbers not letters. When this happens you just need to count up from the bottom (high e string) towards the top (low E string).

I’ve numbered the diagram above as well as listed the letter names of each string.

Knowing the names of each string is an important foundational step in learning guitar. Without it learning anything beyond simple chords becomes impossible.
