Master the Blues with All New Blues Guitar DVD
Learning the blues is a challenging and fun experience. It’s one guitar style that you don’t have to completely master to feel like you’re really playing it. What do I mean by that? Well with a few simple scales and understanding how the 12 bar blues form works you’ll be able to play along with some great backing tracks and feel like you’ve “made it”.
OK so maybe I’m a bit ahead of myself here. How the heck can you learn the 12 bar blues form, pentatonic blues scales and other blues concepts quickly?
Blues Guitar Lesson DVD of Choice
Well right now I think you’d be hard pressed to find a better method then with Learn and Masters Blues guitar dvd.
Taught by the same great course instructor who created their award winning Learn and Master Guitar product, these blues guitar lessons cover everything about the basic 12 bar blues, shuffle, 12/8 and other blues styles along with major and pentatonic scales, blues notes and how to improvise with your soloing.
The course includes:
- 6 Blues Guitar DVDs (5 with lessons 1 with blues guitarist interviews)
- 1 Backing Tracks CD (awesome for practicing see below)
- Digital Lesson Book in PDF Format
- Access to the Online Student Website and Community
Sessions and Workshops
There are five main sessions and workshops to their Blues guitar lesson dvd series. Each session covers several main points of the blues:
- Session 1: Basic Blues – 12 Bar blues, seventh chords, riffs from chords
- Session 2: Paying Your Dues – Blues Notes, Bends and Boogie-Woogie 5ths
- Session 3: Blues Building Blocks – Scales, Picking and simple solo ideas
- Session 4: More Blues Tools – Advanced blues chords, Vibrato and sliding 6th riffs
- Session 5: Interval Madness – Intervals in blues, the Right Notes and Classic finger patterns on the fretboard
Accompanying each session is a workshop. In the workshop course instructor Steve Krenz walks you through several exercises to master the skills he demonstrated and to use in your practice. He also lets you know at what point you’re ready to move onto the next session on the discs.
Lesson Book
Each of the exercises is also outlined in the digital lesson book which is accessible on your computer in PDF format, can be downloaded from the Learn and Master website and also printed out in hard copy if you prefer.
I use the lesson book a lot with this course, especially during session 2 & 3 when I was learning all 12 key signatures and also trying to memorize the shapes of the major and pentatonic scale forms.
Jamming Makes Perfect
While the video quality on the blues guitar dvds in this course is awesome and the lesson content is great the best part in my opinion is the jam along cd included with the course.
The blues, more so then any other style, really is all about playing with other musicians. Of course that’s not always possible at home, but with this backing tracks cd you can pop it in and start playing along with the tracks. You can practice soloing, rhythm or what ever else you feel like.
I’ve sat down for an hour before and just repeated the same track over and over and just jammed to it. This is what really started to make me feel like I was improving. When I was able to play lead over a backing track and actually hit all the right notes it was a huge boost of confidence for my playing.
Conclusion
I know there are other blues guitar lesson dvds out there. For example Rail Road Media has their Blues Guitar Blue Print, but I unfortunately haven’t used their course so can’t speak to how it compares to Learn and Mater’s Blues guitar dvd.
What I can say is that I’ve learned more from this blues guitar lessons course then I have from any other guitar lessons online that I’ve taken. Part of this is because I had a strong interest in learning the blues, and part if it is that this course teaches you fundamentals fast.
While I wouldn’t suggest this course to a beginner it’s ideal for someone who knows a bit of musical theory and can play their open and barre chords already. If you’ve got those basics down then Steve will teach you the rest.
