Beginner Acoustic Guitar Lessons
You've got your first acoustic guitar, and you're eager to
start learning chords, and your favorite tunes off the radio.
It's an exciting time, so lets make sure you choose the right
beginner acoustic guitar lessons to get started.
There's a variety of products available to teach yourself
how to play acoustic guitar, and if you want to get started
ASAP I suggest you do take the teach yourself route. Private
guitar lessons are great, although they often don't teach as
quickly as some people would like to learn and they are also
quite expensive.
What you need to learn:
A good beginner guitar lesson book or video should encompass
a couple of things for you.
1.) The basics (how to hold and tune your guitar)
2.) Chords and strumming techniques
3.) How to read music or tablature (tablature is a type of
music notation used for guitar songs)
4.) Scales and lead playing techniques
The last one isn't a must, more important if you want to
advance your guitar playing. If you're just looking to learn
the basics, play your favorite tunes and also maybe write a
couple of your own then the first three points, and more so the
first two are what you need to know.
I prefer videos to learn with because I like to watch
someone do things before I learn it. That's just me, others
like learning from books. I just find it difficult learning
guitar from reading something. The best beginner guitar lesson
are usually videos or dvds accompanied by a book or printed
material to supplement what you watch. Practice is a big part
of becoming a proficient acoustic guitar player and this is
best left to practice manuals.
Something else that's becoming more popular is learning with
cds as well. The actual lessons aren't on cd but you use band
tracks on a cd to practice with. This gives you the essence
that you're playing with a full band when in fact it's just you
and your cd player. This is great at practicing playing with
other instruments, as well as keeping you motivated to
practice. There's nothing more boring then playing the same old
thing over and over almost like memorizing something for a
test. Jam-a-long cd's as they're called are a great practice
tool.
So all this info is great, but what beginner guitar lesson
product should you be using? I'm a big fan of Learn and Master guitar, a dvd guitar
lesson course. You can read a bit about it here in
my review of the product. That's not the only great product
to teach yourself acoustic guitar. Check out our Guitar lesson
reviews here, and compare a couple of the other products
out there. You might prefer a software program, or maybe an
ebook to learn. One thing is don't just let price guide you,
the most expensive isn't always the best for you, but don't buy
something cheaper just because of price.
